Why a Bike Might Be the Best Gift Under the Tree This Year

There are Christmas gifts kids love for a week.

And then there are the ones they remember.

A bike is different.

It's the first ride down the driveway without someone holding onto the seat. It's racing the neighborhood kids until the streetlights come on. It's family rides, scraped knees, new trails and that first little taste of independence.

Long after they've forgotten what else was under the tree that year, there's a pretty good chance they'll remember the bike.

More Than Another Toy

We're certainly not against toys.

But there's something pretty great about giving a kid something that gets them outside, moving and exploring.

A bike can become part of everyday life instead of something that eventually disappears into the bottom of the toy box.

Ride around the neighborhood.

Head to the trail.

Pack up the family's bikes for an afternoon adventure.

Let them ride circles around the driveway approximately 700 times.

It doesn't really matter where they go.

The point is that they're going.

The Right Size Matters

Buying a kids' bike isn't quite like buying a sweatshirt they'll eventually grow into.

A bike that's too large can be difficult to control and intimidating to ride. One that's too small can be uncomfortable and make riding harder than it needs to be.

The right fit helps kids feel more comfortable and confident on their bike.

That's why we recommend bringing them in when you can.

We can help determine what size works now and find something appropriate for where they are as a rider.

Yes, we know that makes keeping the giant Christmas surprise a little more complicated.

But we'd rather help you find the right bike than sell you one that doesn't fit.

Don't Forget the Helmet

A new bike should come with a helmet that fits correctly, too.

This holiday season, when you purchase a kids' bike at Gio's Outdoors, you'll receive a free helmet with the purchase.

That means you can get them set up with a properly fitting bike and helmet before their first ride.

Most of the bikes you'll find in our stores are from Trek, a brand we trust for riders who are just getting started as well as those who are ready for their next bike.

Now for the Fun Part

Once the important stuff is handled, let them make the bike theirs.

Kids take bike accessories very seriously.

A bell isn't just a bell.

It's their bell.

The water bottle has to be the right one.

And if there is an opportunity to add something colorful, funny or completely unnecessary?

Even better.

Bells, bottles and other accessories are an easy way to personalize a new bike and make the whole gift feel even more special.

They're also great smaller gifts if Grandma, Grandpa or someone else wants something to put under the tree alongside the bike.

Give Them Somewhere to Go

A bike also creates something families can do together.

It doesn't have to be an epic adventure.

Start with a ride around the neighborhood.

Find a local trail.

Pack some snacks and make an afternoon out of it.

Let the kids choose which direction you go.

The destination isn't really the important part.

Some of the best memories happen somewhere between leaving the driveway and coming home.

What If They're Not a Little Kid Anymore?

A bike can still be a pretty incredible Christmas gift.

Maybe they've outgrown their current bike.

Maybe they're ready to move beyond casually riding around the neighborhood.

Maybe you've got a teenager who's starting to discover trails and wants something capable of going farther.

Or maybe your "kid" isn't much of a kid anymore.

We get it.

That's where talking to someone who knows bikes can help. Tell us who you're shopping for, where they ride and what they enjoy doing. We'll help narrow down the options and find a Trek that makes sense for them.

How Do You Hide a Bike for Christmas?

Now we're getting to the difficult questions.

A closet seems like a good idea until someone opens it.

The garage works until they go looking for something.

The neighbor's house has potential.

Grandma's house is even better.

We can't solve every Christmas problem for you.

We can, however, help with the bike.

Give Them Something They'll Remember

There will always be another toy, game or gadget on the Christmas list.

But a bike can become part of childhood.

It gives them freedom.

It gives them confidence.

It gives the family another reason to get outside together.

And eventually, that shiny new bike will have some dirt on it, a few scratches and a whole lot of stories.

That's exactly how it should be.

This holiday season, visit Gio's Outdoors in Smithville, Raymore or Leavenworth and let us help you find the right bike for the kid on your list.

Receive a free helmet with the purchase of a kids' bike.

Then add a bell, grab a bottle and get ready for the first ride.

GO Adventure.
